When You Become the Patient: A Safety Professional on the Other Side of the Decision
In this deeply personal keynote, James Pink moves beyond standards and risk files to confront an unexpected reality: what happens when the safety professional becomes the patient.
After years of evaluating and regulating medical technologies, James found himself living with systemic panuveitis and later facing a neuroendocrine tumour. The frameworks he once applied professionally suddenly became personal. From diagnostic uncertainty to waiting for scan results, from “low-risk” device failures to the emotional toll of delayed imaging, this talk reframes safety risk management through lived experience marked by uncertainty, vulnerability, and hope.
Behind every hazard analysis, verification test, and design review stands a human being. When you become the patient, safety is no longer theoretical. It is personal.
